Rhododendron ponticum

This vigorous shrub, a native of Asia Minor, was introduced to Western Europe in the 17th century. A dense, leggy plant, it blooms in May and June with large, open clusters of bell-shaped mauve or lilac-pink flowers. Especially good for hedges, windbreaks, or bottom-of-garden hedges.

Use

In association with other Rhododendrons or acidic-loving shrubs such as Azaleas, Camellias, Pieris and Magnolias. Can be placed on a patio or terrace in a large container or in a partially shaded flowerbed.

Planting

Ideally in partial shade, protected from wind. Dig a hole three times the size of the root ball and half-fill it with an acidic compost. Place the plant (not too deeply) in the hole. Finish adding the compost, and water well.

Maintenance

Water regularly during flowering and dry weather. Add a specialised fertiliser each spring. Remove dead flowers.
