Hakea victoria
This unusual Australian native belongs to the Protea family. Its tough foliage grows close to the stem and transitions seasonally from green to yellow, orange and red, often attracting more interest than its rather inconspicuous flowers.

Planting
In full sun, protected from cold winds, in very well-drained, acid soil. Remove the plant from its container and thoroughly soak the root ball. Place the plant (not too deeply) in a hole with a mixture of loose soil, sandtype material and topsoil around the root-ball, gently tamping the earth. Water in.
Maintenance
Prune after flowering to keep a compact form. Fertiliser is not necessary unless grown in a container, in which case apply specialised Protea fertiliser. If planted, mulching is preferable to mechanical weeding.
