Lomatia ferruginea

This attractive and unusual Protea is native to southern Argentina and Chile. The bronze-coloured young shoots contrast with its fernlike green mature foliage. Bunches of pinkish-gold blossom have hints of red. An eye-catching addition to any southern-themed garden!

Use

In Mediterranean-themed shrubberies in coastal climates, or in containers.

Planting

In full sun, protected from cold winds, in very well-drained, acid soil. Remove the plant from its container and thoroughly soak the root ball. Place the plant (not too deeply) in a hole with a mixture of loose soil, sandtype material and topsoil around the root-ball, gently tamping the earth. Water in.

Maintenance

Prune after flowering to keep a compact form. Fertiliser is not necessary (for container plantings, apply a specialised Protea fertiliser). If planted, mulching is preferable to mechanical weeding.
